Selecting the Best Tutor for Your Child

You’ve decided your child needs a tutor. So what’s next? Every day thousands of parents make the decision to get their child a tutor. The decision may be prompted by any number of reasons – failing grades, not being challenged in class, preparing for standardized tests – but once the decision is made Moms and Dads face a wide array of tutoring options, including:

  1. Learning Centers – including national and regional franchises like Sylvan Learning and C2 Education.
  2. Private 1-on-1 Tutors – which range from certified tutors and teachers to the college kid looking to earn extra cash.
  3. Online Tutoring – a fairly new entry to the tutoring market, but many tutors now offer their service exclusively online using text messaging (Tutor.com) and voice over IP (TutorVista.com).

When faced with all these choices many parents will either ask their child’s teacher to recommend a tutor or consult with friends and family to get a referral. For parents who ask the teacher they are often disappointed with the typical response, “I’m sorry, but we cannot offer recommendations, it is against school and district policy” or they provide a photocopied list of 50-100 local tutors that you could have gotten from the yellow pages. While those who rely on family and friend referrals are forgetting a critical factor – a tutor who was effective for one child may not necessarily be effective for another.

To select a tutor that is going to best meet your child’s needs and deliver the desired academic results, parents should follow these steps:

Step 1: Determine exactly what type of tutoring your child needs.

Step 2: Understand Your Child’s Individual Learning Style.

Step 3: Narrow the Tutoring Options Based on Learning Style.

Step 4: Evaluate the Remaining Options.

Step 5: Interview Providers

Step 6: Compare and Select a Tutor.
