Adventures in Extreme Poverty, Part 9.1
Posted 8th April 2009 by L_Irene
Okay, so I am sure there are some of you reading this who think that I am merely a whiner. Silently (or audibly) talking to your computer screens reading these blogs and telling me to get off my ass.
The thing is. I am.
But I read these articles discussing discount airfare, giving up lattes or reducing the number of manicures in a month to save money and it makes me very angry. Hell, just the other day I listened to a corporate twit complaining about the cost of paying the pilots and insuring his private jet. EXCUSE ME????
If that's your biggest concern, do me a favor and shut the hell up.
There is another side of the coin, that isn't firmly encased in an excessive living bubble.
There are lives like mine. But it isn't just me. That is the thing. There are so very many other families in situations like mine.........families who want to work, but can't find work. Families struggling to just .........get through a day providing for basic needs. Lattes, manicures, vacations, dinners out.........those are things of the past and not even anywhere near the realm of consideration in our lives.
And perhaps, my voice will help people understand that. And it isn't just a financial toll all of this takes on a family. There is a very serious emotional toll as well. And it is one that cannot and should not be ignored.
The corporate environment in this country needs to change. It has been set up to support the criminal, and reward criminality. The Social Services environment and systems need to be changed to get the help to those families who need it. The laws need to change with the times.........to help those who aren't looking for a free ride or a hand out........but a hand up..........the assistance and the means to simply get through.
Families intact.
Dignity intact.
Because in my world.........this isn't simply a recession. This is a full on economic depression.
Just maybe, if I tell you all my story. Just maybe........if I tell you how it is for me, through my eyes, and in my words.......someone who has the power to effect more change than I.........will hear it. And change will happen. Not just for me, but for the millions of others LIKE me. In situations like mine...and worse.
This is not to say that people who can afford to should not live well. It is however, to say that simply because you can live well.........does not give you right or reason to ignore those of us who can't. Or to view us as lazy and incompetant. For many many of us are not (granted...........I readily admit there are those who make a living off of welfare, who use the system as a means to NOT have to work..........but those are another issue...and trust me, they piss us off too).
