Here I am in Vancouver

showering and not too much exertion will substitute for deodorant until

3 pm, three hours from now. I took a bath last night to wash off my

day, so by the time I got to bed, I imagine it was around 3:30 a.m.

Missouri time.

I slept in til 10 am (noon Missouri time). Got up, turned on the

computer, emailed my friend to let her know I was here, and bcc'd

Dereck on it so he would also know I was here. She called m shortly

thereafter, and we will get together this afternoon after her son's

nap. I have a drinks thingy I could go to tonight, a reception. But

those are always awkward, and I think I'd rather hang out with my

friend.

Here I am in Vancouver, it's raining, I have neither coat, nor

umbrella, nor mascara, nor deodorant, I am in one of the most beautiful

cities in the world, and I am sitting in my room, typing on the

computer. I wish I could muster the energy to care that I am here. I

can tell that the architecture is beautiful, from my window. The hotel

is nice, the room is pretty standard-- I've been in better, and I've

been in worse. I can't set up my exhibit yet because my suitcase is

having a one-night stand, probably with a leather bag from London.

What I feel like I need the most from this trip is some alone time

in the hotel room, and by jove, I shall have it. I went down and

registered for the conference, walked around all of the lobbies, bought

myself a pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks, came back up and called

one of the conference attendees I know here to see if she wanted to

have lunch. She didn't answer, so I left messages, and started this

post.

It's tempting just to order the Cobb Salad and sit in my room. Not

very many conference people are here yet. Well, if they are, they

aren't making themselves known in the public venues of the hotel. That

should pick up tomorrow.

Tell you what: I'll look through my conference packets, see what the

schedule is for meet and greets, ponder the Cobb Salad option, and then

I'll decide what to do with myself.

What should I do while I'm here, oh those who have been to Vancouver? A bit rainy for Granville Island and Stanley Park, eh?
