I am Madly in Love With...Baby Logic

I've found that whether or not you're a first time parent or an old hand, Baby Logic never fails to amuse, excite and yes, sometimes alarm. For those who read and haven't yet figure it out, we are first time parents - and this will be our only child. While both of us have had experience with newborns and babies in the past (he with his ex's kids and me with my years-younger-than-me sister), we both find that the things Amelie does on an hourly basis are at once both boldly logical as well as uproariously funny.

I have absolutely fallen in love with the very black and white world of Baby Logic and its practical applications. Obviously, I don't know for sure what's going on in her baby brain when she does things, but it's the way I imagine her thoughts that only add to the humor. Some things, I know that she's "learned" from watching us. For others, she seems to have just come to some random conclusion of her own accord and applies this logic to her daily routine.

But I do believe that I realized my true love for Baby Logic yesterday, over a late lunch/early dinner of grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup.

First, let me state that we are only "allowed" to do things for Amelie once or twice before she insists, loudly, by means of a series of screams, that she will Do for Herself. In this case, it was being fed soup. I've fed her soup twice. She knows, basically, how to use a spoon (I say basically only because while she may know how to use the spoon, her coordination and therefore execution are in serious need of work), therefore, it does not matter if the food in question is only slightly thicker in consistency than water - she will use the damn spoon herself and no amount of persuasion will have her do anything otherwise.

M and I watched her, in a mix of silent horror and contained laughter, as she would successfully fill the spoon with soup, navigate the spoon to her mouth spilling half the soup along the way...and then tip the spoon toward her open mouth (but not actually into her open mouth)...and pour the soup down her dress.

After a few passes and a dress that was turning from green to orange at an alarming rate, she grabbed my napkin from me and tried to wipe her area of the table...by smacking the napkin into the affected area. [sigh]

So, where's the Baby Logic come in to play? M decided, wisely, that perhaps it would be easier for her to dunk her sandwich chunks into the soup and get both soup and sandwich in one bite, thereby making it easy to dispense with the spoon. So, he took a piece of sandwich and said, "Look, Bean! You can dunk the sandwich! See? dunk, dunk, dunk..,."

  • : D Thank you, Lakshmi. I love Baby Logic's black and whiteness and how it's so offset by the most ridiculous applications and series of events.
