A year without shopping! Can you?

I was amused to read this article in the latest issue of Good housekeeping. This is about a family who decided to not buy anything but perishables for one whole year. I was quite impressed by how they followed through their decision. I am not a shopaholic, but occasionally give away to impulsive purchases. Reading through the article, I was wondering whether it is doable at all for our family. We do not buy things we cannot afford anyway, but still it would take a lot of courage to attempt to do such a thing. Are you a shopaholic? How often do you indulge? And would you ever take up something like this?

  • I found your blog funny and cute ;-) I also feel the same if I try to control too much. I think for some people though this can change their way of life sometimes. A year of doing it might change their spending habits. Living with my husband has changed my spending habits drastically ;-)

  • Wow! I am glad they followed through! No, i am pretty sure i cant follow through something like that. It will be difficult not for the temptation part, but i think, knowing us, we will overspend the following year! Simple.

I think following a budget will make it easeir for sure.. and then you dont over spend

  • I gave it a though;, but then came back to my usual consolation - "What is life if you control everything too much?" ;-) It would have been nice if there were no superstores that carry everything, that makes a trip to get milk and bread a $200 + trip!

  • I think it would be good for everyone to "shop" less....we are a spend , spend kind of country. Throw things out because we are tired of them...not because it is broken or used up...we just don't want it any more. It would be an eye opener for a lot of people.I would love to try this after my youngest is out on her own. How about you.?
