I used to think that we only need to be protective when they are in Elementary school and our culture's rules reinforces this (volunteering opportunities at the middle school are less available and requirements are more stringent when going on campus). Also her first day as a 9th grader at her high school, the principal and staff told the parents to go home for the welcome meeting. But now that my daughter is a senior I see a lot of things I missed and I wished I continued being protective as I was when she was younger. When things go wrong as a teen, it's a lot harder to undo and the many consequences can be permament or long-lasting.
