Protective Mother!

Today was the first time I aloud my little one to go to a Birthday Party where I did not stay and watch her like a hawk.

It was a new experience for me.. I have two older daughters then my littlest one. I never allowed them to go to a "by themselves" party till they were in the latter years of elementary school. I had seen some awful things happen when I was a kid so it tainted my view from being more ... open minded with my children. Of course Now as I have grown as a parent, while still cautious, I allow them to be more active with their friends.

It was great, it made her real happy and you could see she felt like big girl. When I went to pick her up she ran to me and hugged and she was ready to come home. It was worth a little worry to see her smile and look happy... guess mom had a growing experience today!

  • I used to think that we only need to be protective when they are in Elementary school and our culture's rules reinforces this (volunteering opportunities at the middle school are less available and requirements are more stringent when going on campus). Also her first day as a 9th grader at her high school, the principal and staff told the parents to go home for the welcome meeting. But now that my daughter is a senior I see a lot of things I missed and I wished I continued being protective as I was when she was younger. When things go wrong as a teen, it's a lot harder to undo and the many consequences can be permament or long-lasting.
