Do you have a family plan? Or not…

Four years ago I told my husband we were ready for children. He was skeptical or better said he thought he was too young… Me on the other hand thought we were ready. I was 24 years old, I had a good job, we just put our lives together after Hurricane Katrina destroyed it, and though life was giving me an open invitation to change our routines and directions. Call it Biological Clock if you want to… I was ready. I quit smoking cold turkey and started hitting the gym regularly. We started trying a few months later and got pregnant 8 months after trying, by this time my husband was as much on it as I was and our lives had already started to transform into a more easy going-relax-ready-to-be-parents life. We truly loved it.Matthew (our son) came to this world as the final piece we were looking for to complete our personal puzzle. He was totally planned. He is now two years old and people constantly ask us when will we give him the sibling… and truth is we are still waiting for the right time to try again. I think next year sometime after March will be good as I will have over one year with the new company I am working for, I will be getting close to 30 and my husband will be 37 and Matthew will be 3 by the time the new one comes along and the economy should be picking up. That is our plan. Our planned life and the way I like it. I need to see it and be sure we can handle it (emotionally, financially, physically etc) it’s the way we are.

Wondering did you had a plan with your kids (ages in between the children, how you and husband (or significant other will do with work –financially-, having a target age in which you wanted to have your kids) or you just toss the birth control out one day and decided the how’s? will be answer as you make it along the way…

  • I always like to have a plan too. We waited six years before we got pregnant. Can you imagine how much badgering we got about when we were going to have a child? It was awful and from both sides of our family and coworkers. But, we waited until we were ready. We are stopping at one, wow it is alot ot work! ( I mean it fondly!)

  • Well, yes, for very simlar reasons that you mentioned. We started trying for a baby when we were ready, emothionaly, financially and mentally!
For our second child, we both are in splits, there are times when i want one two or may be three. There are times when he wants more. FOr right now, we are still enjoying with our almost two year old. Like before, i think we will know when the time is right

But yes, let it be your decision and not what people want you to do!

  • Totally agree with you, life works its mysterious ways and we do have to embrace all of it. I think its amazing how people embrace their circumstances (like parenthood, marriage, personal and family health, etc). Even with a timed family we have stuff thrown at us that we have to deal with (for example the health of our children).

  • Visiting from the adoption community, I can say that there are many people who had a plan, but no matter how carefully they planned, their reality bears no relation to their plans. I have no idea what % of people this applies to, but my gut tells me it's pretty significant. So while there's much good in planning, sometimes the ultimate coping mechanism is to be able to embrace whatever life deals you.
