Freakanomics anyone?

I recently finished "Freakanomics" by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner. I must say... EXCELLENT. I found myself only too frequently described in the parenting pages, and was shocked to see some of the topics discussed among 190ish pages (without bonus material). I definitely recommend this book and it's not heavy reading. I'd love to hear other thoughts.Flag as inappropriate Posted by Yes, Mommy has to work today on 2nd November 2007

I read it when it came out and loved it as well - now I love reading their column in the NY Times magazine when it runs there. Have you checked it out?

I read the Freakonomics Blog frequently. I love it! And I just realized I spelt Freakonomics wrong in my first post... Grrrr! That makes me crazy.

Yes, I've read it and loved it. I especially loved the chapter about naming babies, specifically the observation that popular names tend to start out at the unusual end of the spectrum with wealthy parents, then over time move down the food chain. And, of course, the whole abortion/crime connection was fascinating.Flag as inappropriate Posted by Diane on 5th November 2007

My visit today to the Freakonomics blog has prompted a stop at another site....
www.Wordsmith.org
I adore words and have made it a mission for most of my life to learn a new word everyday. I can't believe I have never discovered this site before!
Diane... I also enjoyed the baby name connection and found it to be true in so many cases! (Of course I had to test the theory...even though, technically that's what the authors already did!).
I also found the "Do Parents Matter?" section to be quite interesting. I have made it my life work since I became a Mom to do all the right things... send them to the right schools... etc... and maybe it was all for naught?Flag as inappropriate Posted by Yes, Mommy has to work today on 5th November 2007 -
