  • I'm an accessory idiot. The only "accessories" I wear most days are my wedding band (no stone) and my eight earrings (which most people don't notice, anyway). I just don't know how to wear other stuff without feeling like I'm playing dress up.

I have a company holiday party to go to in a month but no money to buy a new dress. Does anyone have suggestions for how I can glamorize current 'nice but not THAT nice' dresses with some relatively cheap accessories? And how does one use them in an everyday office setting?

Just a shot in the dark...

  • This is Susan's latest post at the working closet. It's about scarf tying, and it might be a really fun and different way to add accessories.

Also, this month is accessory month on the flickr photo pool..there are some great ideas there as well.

I've become a jeans and t-shirt girl since babyjama came along, so I don't think I'd be much help.

  • Do you have an H&M where you live? I often find some really great accessories there and they are dirt cheap. Also, check out Marshalls or TJMaxx - they have a great selection. What I try to do is have one great piece - so perhaps a bright bold necklace, or a great bracelet -- but only one, if it's really drawing attention to itself.

For the holiday dress - how about some really nice earrings and then a bracelet?

  • Like Nataly, I would go for a bold necklace. Not necessarily chunky, but, something somewhat prominent and eyecatching. For example, how about something that sits high, just below your collarbone, with a big stone or something. I always check out the clearance departments for my fav online stores: Eddie Bauer & JJill. They often have GREAT deals on jewelry. And it's amazing how some cheapo jewelry can look fab if you wear it with confidence. I have a friend who can pull that off. I would always be "oh that necklace/sweater is beautiful," and she'd go "oh, got it on clearance at Target for $2." Let us know what you decide to do!

  • ooh fun! also departement stores do a lot of sales right now which is great! they have a 'cheap jewelry' section and a lot of times they are 50% off or buy one get one free (just got a silver loopy neclace for $10!)

do you have any skirts? you can alwasy pair a skirt with a sparkly sweater too! or if you have a really fuzzy sweater in a 'festive' color you can LIGHTLY sprinkle some glitter on it and you for 'sparkle' ;)

or if you want to go 'fancy' you can wear a silky satiny cami with a skirt and leave it at that, or even toss on a velour/velvet jacket (if you have one) or some other dark colored jacket or cardigan sweater.

ooh just try stuff on, take picures and show us! i so want to come over and raid your closet for you LOL so excited!

  • Thank you for all of your suggestions. I don't have friends to bounce this stuff off of, so I really appreciate it. I'd have any of you over to raid my closet! Anybody live in central CA?

Where I live (out in the hills), we don't have department stores or a mall. We just got a TJMaxx about a month ago, so I'll have to go check that out.

Based on your suggestions, I'm now reconsidering my entire idea of an outfit for the company party. I may just have to take some pictures!

    Thanks again!
