Recommendations for good reads for Hubby?

I need to get my hubby some new books for Christmas... I have a few ideas. The basics with Alton Brown, Anthony Bourdain and some book by the Steelers Football Coach. Any suggestions for good novels that big, strong, I watch too much football, men might enjoy?Flag as inappropriate Posted by Yes, Mommy has to work today on 3rd December 2007

I used to count myself as an avid reader, but these days I'm lucky to get through a full New Yorker article without passing out. I am somewhat big, marginally strong, and don't watch nearly enough football, but here are some suggestions that you might want to flip through before you fork over the cash (or plastic):
American Pastoral, by Philip Roth (it's about the post-war America but the main character was once a big, strong athlete);
Mystic River by Dennis Lehane (unless he saw the movie);
The Road by Cormac McCarthy (dark);
Where I'm Calling From, stories by Raymond Carver;
something by Don Delillo and/or Richard Ford, maybe The Sportswriter
Hope that is helpful!Flag as inappropriate Posted by Avi Spivack on 3rd December 2007 -
My husband just read No country for old Men by Cormac McCarthy - he loved it! He is now reading a book about Sicilian mafia - need to get you the title - I can't wait to read it myself!Flag as inappropriate Posted by Victoria on 3rd December 2007

The life of Pi
maybe anything by Louie L'Amour?
I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell - nonfiction
Can I Keep My Jersey?: 11 Teams, 5 Countries, and 4 Years in My Life as a Basketball Vagabond (ok, so this is the one I want!)Flag as inappropriate Posted by Mandy Nelson - Dandysound on 4th December 2007 -
Ok - here is the book i've mentioned in my previous post: Gomorrah by Roberto Saviano - it's about Naples organized crime system... The author is very young (28) and after publishing this book it became a best seller around the world and won many awards. He is now under police protection! That alone makes me want to read it - waiting for my husband to finish it so that I can read it!!!

Thanks guys. I will check out your suggestions. I always like to find books that I will like to read as well (and I definitely see some of those here!). And I can tell you that Football book is NOT one I will be reading... however, I did order it on AMAZON today for him along with Confessions of an Economic Hitman.Flag as inappropriate Posted by Yes, Mommy has to work today on 5th December 2007

If he's into clever science fiction and british humor, you can't go wrong with anything by Terry Pratchett. Hilarious, smart stuff.Flag as inappropriate Posted by Lylah M. Alphonse on 6th December 2007
