  • Yay!!! We're doing no till gardening this year...more on that at my blog... We just planted our early crop. We're growing spinach, lettuce, cilantro, and snow peas. Later on this summer we'll be planting zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes, etc. I'm thrilled!! How are your gardens coming?

  • That is soooo great! I have been reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. This is inspiring me to want to start planting. Have you read it?

  • No, but I absolutely loved The Poisonwood Bible by her. The way that she describes the world is so engaging to me...I'll have to check out Animal, Vegetable, Miracle.

  • I'm hoping to get some planting done tomorrow when my oldest gets home from school! It's such a great way to relax.

  • Ugh. Not much progress over here b/c just too busy to get out there! And usually I just get started and my chickie decides she's had enough and wants to be held, so I'm trying to dig with her hanging off my leg! So far, just a couple baby tomato plants. (I'm in the south in zone 8b so we are already onto tomatoes!)

  • What have I planted? Dreams. Up here, we won't be planting much of anything for pretty close to two months!

But my crocusses that I put in last fall are coming up nicely through the damp leaves -- and the leftover SNOW!

  • We have our sunflowers, isomopsis, bee balm, and sweet peas started inside. My hollyhocks that we started last year are nowhere to be seen, but maybe they'll make an appearance yet. My elderly neighbors decided last year that they couldn't keep up with their gardens last year so I inherited a ton of lillies.

We started our tomatoes inside, and they are coming along well. They girls are campaigning to grow something fun like melons or pumpkins. We'll see.

  • My husband read a book this winter about only buying items within 100 miles of your home and it inspired him to want a vegetable garden. The past month he has spent getting our backyard turned into raised planters. Our soil is very poor. Being a Landscape Architect, raised beds mean using stack stone with nice paths. It looks great! The soil has been added and this weekend we start planting. Some of our flower and veg. seeds which we started indoors are ready to go in the garden. I ordered seed potatoes from Seed Savers Exchange and they arrive yesterday. Potatoes were a special request from my 12 year daughter. We plan to have tomatoes, pumpkin(have a feeling these will take over), and lots of annual flowers. I grew up on a farm, so small scale gardening in the back yard is not something I am use to. But this will be fun for the kids to watch our food grow. We have also take a full size whiskey barrel and fixed it so that one of our down spouts fills it with water. There is a water hose near the bottom so that we can use this to water our garden.

  • We now have tiny little plant sproutlings. Our spinach, lettuce and peas have all come up. Yay!!! Hope all of your gardens are coming along too. MaryP, I didn't realize it stayed cold for so long in Canada...keep dreaming.

  • This past Saturday, we planted our tomato, potatoes, peppers, and some flower seeds. Everything is looking good and can't wait to harvest that first home grown tomato.
