Member Close-Up: Earthmama

IT/Project specialist, writer, and online business owner

Each week, we'll introduce you to a different member of the Work It, Mom! community. This week, we got to know Earthmama a little better.

1.) What do you do?

I'm a part-time IT/Project Specialist, outside the home; at home, I am a part-time writer and local events coordinator for an online mom’s magazine called Momtalk.com. I also have an online business, a quaint little store that offers a variety of earth friendly/socially conscious products.

2.) How did you end up in your current career?

I graduated college in the mid-90s with a Bachelors degree in Environmental Studies and Forest Resources. After several years travelling and working in various states, I realized I needed to find a career that actually paid the bills, so I continued my education in Information Technology. After 10 years in the IT field, I have decided to do what I really love, which is write and have my own biz in the Environmental field -- finally.

3.) What's your dream job?

In college, I was a raft guide on the Colorado River -- that was pretty awesome. At this point in my life, I am totally happy being mom to my beautiful children. BUT if I could do that AND be a wildlife photographer for National Geographic, that would be cool!

4.) Tell us a few things on your Life To-Do List.

Go to Ireland with my dad before he leaves this world forever. Write the novel about my mother. Make sure my children grow up to become independent adults, respectful of other people and other cultures. Travel to exotic places with my husband and children and experience the wonders of the world

5.) Would you want your kids to follow in your career footsteps?

I want my children to grow up knowing they can be whatever they want to be. I want them to choose a career that they love, not a career to “pay the bills.” So, no, I do not want them to follow in my footsteps -- I wasted a lot of time and it took too long to get to where I am.
