Cathy Rosen is a Senior Equities Trader for a hedge fund based in New York City. She is a mom of a four year-old boy and a one month-old baby girl. In this interview, Cathy shares her thoughts on having to justify her choice to work, why finding time for a short workout makes her a better mom, why talking business at home with her husband is a good thing, how she manages to avoid the infamous working-mom guilt, and why she wouldn’t mind freezing herself for a bit.

Can you tell us a little bit about your job – what does it entail, how long have you been in this industry and position?

I have been an equity trader at a hedge fund for the past 20 years. I’ve had the privilege of working at only 2 well-known, successful funds. I truly enjoy this job. I use my knowledge of the market and the relationships I have developed to gather information to help the portfolio managers I work with make money for our investors.

Can you briefly describe your usual day?

On the days I work out, I wake up at 5:45 am – otherwise, it’s 7:00 am - and watch business news on TV. I get onto my home computer as soon as possible to read emails containing market research and information. My son wakes up between 7 and 8:30 am. My husband leaves by 7 am, so he doesn’t get to see our son in the morning. I spend some time with my son, and at 8 am our nanny arrives. She takes my son to school at 1 pm and picks him up at 4 pm. After school they have lots of activities, play dates, etc.

At 8:30 am, I walk to my office and continue to read news to prepare for the day. I spend the day trading during the market hours of 9:30 am to 4 pm. After the close of the market, I get organized and either go home to my son or go out to a business meeting. My husband and I have “date nights” once or twice during the week, never on the weekend. If we are all at home, we spend a few quality hours with our son. He goes to bed fairly late, 9 pm or 10 pm, so that we can have more time together at night.

Our weekends are all about our son and we spend them together as a family. We tend to sleep-in in the morning and then go to a show, play, or some performance, and we see a lot of our friends who have kids.
