Do you think being an entrepreneur makes it easier or harder to balance your work and family responsibilities? Why?
For me, it is definitely easier. I designed my job with the goal of having a flexible work schedule for myself. Although I get pulled in many directions to do more, I definitely have boundaries that I stick to. I get to take my kids to pre-school, participate weekly in their classrooms, take them to the doctor without getting permission from a manager, and when I need a big hug, come home for lunch and see them! It’s tremendously liberating to be in charge of your own schedule. I work just as many hours as I did before, but doing it on my own terms is glorious.
What has been the most challenging part about starting your own company?
The stress of wanting to do everything yourself - or with your partners who are working just for equity - to minimize expenses. We are not experts in every aspect of running a business, so we have to be careful about what we do ourselves and when we hire someone. Thankfully, we have a lot of informal advisors who are passionate about this space and want to give us their ideas, contacts, and help - that has been a huge blessing.
What has surprised you in this process of running your own business?
I thought it might be a little isolating to work for myself, not getting the kind of recognition that I was used to when I was working in a corporate environment leading big cross-functional initiatives. Instead, I get incredible feedback from pretty much everyone I come into contact with about our business. I find that the energy I get from other people saying how much they love our business gives me more energy than I’ve ever had before.
I’m a walking cliché about how empowering it is to work on something you are passionate about and the fulfillment that it brings. I guess that’s how it became cliché – the kernel of truth in it!
What do you find most exciting about being an entrepreneur?
It’s very Oprah – but “designing your dream life” is what I’m doing. My husband jokes that I’d better like my job since I created it - no one else is responsible for my happiness. As an entrepreneur, I can see a direct impact of my work, and I can work on things that people tell me are important to their overall well being. That’s exciting for me.
