What do you find most exciting about being an entrepreneur?

The most exciting thing is that I own my successes and my failures. When you feel passionately engaged in what you do it gives you the strength and the stamina to live through and enjoy the journey of both. When I take a call from a mom somewhere in the country and she tells me how much her child loved watching Braincandy or listening to our music it’s the most exciting thing in the world.

Can you briefly describe your usual day, from the time you wake up in the morning?

The best way to describe a usual day for us is as a sprint—in order to get to the weekend which turns into a marathon. The way I like to think of it is as a triad.

Part 1: Wake Up! Blaise is always the first one up, and no matter how hard she tries to keep us on schedule she is always the one who makes us late! Mainly because we either have issues around how we’re going to wear our hair or the clothes we choose. I’m being a bit sarcastic but I have to say it was surprising to me that I’m already encountering these issues at when my daughter is just six years old! We finally created a work around for both kids that helps us get to school on time. We have a hair “calendar” that we stick to and we take out our clothes for the whole week on Sunday night and put them into daily cubbies. I know it sounds a little type-A but you wouldn’t believe how much time and energy it saves in the morning.

Logan is our sleepy head—he’ll wear whatever I put out for him, the challenge is whether or not he’ll actually make it out of bed, to the breakfast table and out the front door.

At 9am if we’re all in a good mood and heading off to school I know it’s going to be a good day.

Part 2: Work: From 9:15-3pm I cram through work. I’ve learned how to be very efficient doing East Coast calls first thing in the morning and meetings with our team in the early afternoon. Everyone in our office respects flexibility. One of the best things I can offer as the CEO of a small business is that I will never say ‘no’ to an employee who misses work one day to attend his son’s field trip or leaves early to get to t-ball practice. Everyone is on the same page about getting their work done but not sacrificing family.
