What does your husband do and how do you split up your responsibilities at home?
My husband is a program manager on the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. He is also a Commander in the United State Navel reserves. Everyone pitches in and helps. We don’t assign duties; it is just all hands on deck. We both try to stay as active as possible in the kids’ lives. We both work as a team and focus on our work, the kids homework, baseball practice/games and the joys of being a family!
Have you made any sacrifices in your career since having kids?
We make it work. The only compromise is sleep! My family is very important to me. My husband and I both left tenured management jobs in Georgia to move closer to our family. As chapters end, new chapters open. You have to be brave enough to take that leap. I am so grateful to be close to my family and friends in Texas and to be blessed with working with the finest group of people at Decision Toolbox.
Who/what has been most helpful to you as you’ve navigated through your career as a mom? Where do you go for support/advice to help you?
My family. My parents always said I could do anything and they continue to support me every step of the way. I just recently completed a double MBA while working full-time and raising two small children. I have rock solid determination, I get that from both sides of the family. My husband continues to provide the love and support and I most always reach out to him for advice.
Please share with us the top three things/strategies that’s you’ve used to successfully get through your busy days at work and at home:
- Plan ahead, keep to a schedule, do what you say you will do – every time.
- Don’t over promise – know your limitations.
- Surround yourself with positive influences.
What are some things you chose to not be perfect about as you raised your kids and followed your career path?
My closet is a mess. I can barely walk in it! It is my one area that doesn’t get organized. I don’t focus on things that I cannot impact. I focus on the things I can impact and the things that I am passionate about.
We’ve all had them – describe your most trying/embarrassing/don’t-want-to-remember-this moment as a professional mom:
My family and I were traveling by car for an extended weekend. It was late in the evening and the kids were asleep. I took a client call to discuss strategy for a position I was recruiting. To my surprise, my little one woke up and screamed out in excitement that we were almost there. I was able to save the call and still to this day don’t know how much the client heard. I am still working with this client and we have established a very collaborative relationship.
