Work-life balance is critical in building a strong and lasting corporate culture. Nothing will retain top talent more than creating an environment where your employees are recognized as people who deserve to be respected, understood and honored.
Every CEO I have ever met has expressed their desire to be the employer-of-choice. All they have to do is ask their employees what would really make them the
employer-of-choice and then execute!
Can you briefly describe your usual day – from the time you wake up to the time you to go bed?
I wake around 5:30 with coffee, the newspaper and trade journals. Then I send out a daily inspirational email to my management team, such as “impossible is merely an opinion.” After scanning emails for brushfires, I go to do yoga, spin or lift weights for one hour. The balance of my day is split between client visits, sales calls, operational issues, etc.
When I don’t have to leave my home office, I usually use a system that I call 45/15. Like most business owners, I have to wear a lot of hats. To help with my time management, I use an electronic timer. Every hour, I set it for 45 minutes, select the type of task I am going to tackle and press go. Then I sprint for 45 minutes. The remainder of the hour is used to eat, take a break or make a personal call.
All of my managers use this system. The thought behind it is that anyone can sprint for 45 minutes and get the most out of that hour.
