Sheila is the founder and CEO of a great new company Care.com. If you’re a busy working mom you know the value of a great caregiver for your kids. Care.com helps you find one. Sheila lives in Weston, MA with her husband and two kids, ages 7 and 15. She has a ridiculously impressive background, including several graduate degrees and senior management positions with extremely successful companies. Somehow she manages to juggle it all while also working together with her husband. If you are curious how, check out this great interview we recently did with Sheila.

Can you tell us a bit about your company?

Care.com is an online service that connects families seeking qualified care givers with a national network of trusted providers. Our service offering currently addresses child care, pet care, senior care and tutoring – and we are in the process of evaluating additional services.

Essentially, Care.com is designed to provide a simple and safe way for families and individuals to manage their care needs. We aim to provide peace of mind for families looking to address the lifecycle of specific care needs by providing free background checks and a suite of tools and resources for selecting the best care options possible.

What inspired you to start your business?

The idea stemmed from my own personal struggles to find quality care providers. My husband and I both work; we have two sons as well as two dogs. In the midst of managing a career and raising my children, my father went through quadruple bypass surgery. That experience raised my awareness of the fact that no online site existed for addressing the constantly changing care needs of many families out there. You may have a trusted nanny or a regular pet sitter, but if their personal circumstances change or if they suddenly fall ill, it can be a struggle to find help in a moment’s notice.

What did you do in your previous life?

Before starting Care.com, I was part of several Internet ventures including Upromise.com, an online service helping families save money for college, and TheLadders.com, an online service helping people find jobs.

Do you think being an entrepreneur makes it easier or harder to balance your work and family responsibilities? Why?

I guess it all depends what day of the week you ask me that question on! Being an entrepreneur, you can’t help but develop a deep personal investment in your work. It’s like raising a child in its own way. Of course, at times my work schedule provides me with flexibility when family responsibilities require my attention – so that is an upside. But as with most working moms, it’s always a juggling act to raise a family and manage a career at the same time. I think first and foremost you have to be able to separate work and family – and recognize that at times it’s important to be able to mentally turn work off.
