  • I used to run home, change and get right into the family business of dinner and cleaning. Now I go to my bedroom change and workout. I feel much more relaxed when I emerge from my bedroom

  • The toy room! I was having such a meltdown every time I would sit down to read or watch TV and the toys were everywhere. Finally, we made the front room (kind of out of sight to all else) just the playroom and reinforced that it was where all the toys must stay. Now out in the sitting room, I can read and watch TV and never have to face that mess with such dread again.

  • Now that airlines charge so much extra for checking your luggage (as much as $120 per suitcase, roundtrip, on some carriers!) I find it easier and cheaper to ship some of my essentials to my destination, especially if I'm traveling around the holidays. It takes a bit of extra planning, but it's definitely worth it.

  • Be aware of your own emotions and energy levels. It's nigh on impossible for many of us to take a day or even a whole hour to ourselves so make of list of small activities you can do in 10 minutes that recharge you. It could be you sit for 10 minutes reading before going into the office, go for a walk around the block at lunchtime, schedule a 10 minute chat with a friend - whatever it is that sustains and rejuvenates you. Then when you can feel yourself in need of a quick pick me up - do one of your 10 minute recharges. try and work up to fitting in 3 per day - that's 30 minutes to yourself! Find creative ways to do it - come on, we can all find 10 minutes!

  • When my husband makes a smoothie in the morning, I have him double up and then pour the extra into popsicle makers. Later, when the kids want a snack, they think they're getting a popsicle treat, whereas I know it's actually healthy!

  • One of the things I do when I get home from work is give the kids a snack and go into my bedroom for about a half hour and relax. I do this to give my mind a break and refocus before I tackle house chores, cooking, etc. Once I feel rejuventated I can do more than if I came home with frayed nerves.

  • Find the floor in your bedroom, organise it, if the last thing you see before sleep and the first thing you see when you wake is tidy and peaceful you sleep better and begin the day with less chaos. And surprisingly the peace and organisation in your room will spread out into the rest of the house slowly.

  • I've taken multitasking to a new level and built a Treadmill Desk!! Take a used or new treadmill with straight arms (important), velcro down a small shelf, add your laptop (and in my case, an extended keyboard) - and start walking! I can easily walk and type at about 1 MPH. It's very slow - but after a morning at work, I'm totally guilt free if I don't find time to work out. A work-at-home luxury that I hope will inspire some of you -- walk on!
