Speak up when you fight with your husband!

Do you suppress your emotions when you argue with your husband? According to new research, this is not a good idea and may lead to health issues or… death:

In men, keeping quiet during a fight didn’t have any measurable effect on health. But women who didn’t speak their minds in those fights were four times as likely to die during the 10-year study period as women who always told their husbands how they felt.

The underlying thesis is that when you suppress your communication and feelings this leads to serious psychological issues, which in turn translate into physical problems, from depression to eating disorders.

Are you vocal about your feelings and opinions when you argue with your husband? Or do you choose to say less than you might otherwise? Why?

  • i think there is a difference between refusing to participate in a stupid fight and not letting your husband know how you feel. sometimes in the heat of an argument it IS best to walk away! neither of you are thinking clearly (well ok obviously HE isnt or he would be agreeing with you! hehe) but later in a calmer more rational conversation you can discuss solutions and what you want with out fighting AND you get heard.

  • I tend to keep my emotions inside of me and I know it's not good... I end up snapping and it turns into a bigger deal then it should... having said that - we rarely argue....

  • Sheesh - to think I just posted this on my blog - am I the ONLY one who decided it was better to just walk away?

  • You know, I am one of those women who speaks up - perhaps too much. I sometimes worry that putting things out there makes them more permanent, more impactful, that I should hold back some more. I know speaking out - according to this article - will keep me healthier, but I wonder if it will keep my marriage healthier.

  • I always say what is on my mind, but I do it diplomatically as I believe "fighting" is counterproductive.
