According to a comprehensive study conducted in 2007, working mothers suffer a substantial penalty as compared to childless women at work. Working mothers are perceived as less competent at work and receive lower salaries than women who don't have children (and are in the same position or role in the workplace.)

What's more infuriating, is that working fathers don't suffer this penalty, but rather, the opposite. The study found that working fathers are considered more competent and don't make less money than men without children at work.
