Feminists Rock Romance

What type of woman do you think of when you hear the word "feminist"?

According to a new study, the stereotype of a feminist as a woman who is anti-men and anti-romances should now be put to sleep. The study found that:

They found that having a feminist partner was linked to healthier heterosexual relationships for women. Men with feminist partners also reported both more stable relationships and greater sexual satisfaction.

This doesn't actually surprise us. In our opinion, a feminist is a strong, confident woman who stands up for herself and her rights, believes in the power of women, and goes after her goals without regard to conventions. Being a strong and confident person makes one better at relationships so the study makes sense.

Do you agree? Do you find that the old stereotypes of feminists still hold? What do you think of when you hear the word "feminist"?

MaryP, good for correcting your roommate! A lot feminists gripe about women who say, "I'm not a feminist but..." but we rarely talk about all those women who say, "I'm a feminist, but...." Rock on!

The stereotypes are definitely still there, and I'm glad to see a study that helps debunk them. I also totally agree with MaryP that male-bashing is NOT the same thing as feminism - it's not even a necessary part of it. No matter where you stand on feminism, some men are jerks, and some are wonderful. The same thing applies to women, by the way.

My husband emailed me that one line: "Men with feminist partners also reported both more stable relationships and greater sexual satisfaction," and titled the email "Why I'm glad you're a feminist." Made me grin!............................................. ...........................................

I do think, however, that there's a lot of anti-male sexism out there pretending to be feminism. I once had a roommate, who, whenever she was going to say something horrifically anti-male, would start with, "Hold on now, I'm going to start talking like a feminist." One day I stopped her."You're not talking like a feminist. What you're doing is just plain ordinary sexism." We need to get that straight. Sneering at someone because of their gender is sexism, whether we're mocking women OR men.
