The story of stuff

This You Tube video is Chapter 5 of an awesome film. The film reminded me of how we (Americans) have advanced into the rat race of “work to shop.” Having “things” means more than “time” for relationships; If you like what you see in chapter 5 you can watch the whole thing from start to finish at You Tube. It is liberating to be told the secrets of how deceptive advertising works.

Marketing to children is in full swing, which empowers them to influence family decisions. A direct affect... parents' authority has diminished and kids know it. Kids are in control. Even the messages obtained from computer games and TV give children the feeling of having it all and deserving it. How can parents win any struggle in this era of the consumer-hyper child?

As I have said many times before, TIME is the element missing for ensuring success in our children tomorrow. If we take away the consumables, we must replace them with something else - I know, TIME. Time to listen. Time to share. Time to learn. Time to care. Time to model.

We must make changes today to benefit a better world in the future. Maybe this documentary will unlock “a warrior” inside us to stop the destructive cycle of consumption beyond our personal needs.

I will check it out - thanks for pointing this out... My biggest worry is to raise children that have sense of entitlement - i hope to be a good model for them, focusing on what’s really important vs material things
This is so true. I'm constantly worried about consumerism and how it affects my daughter. Even though she's only a baby, I'm sure it affects her even now. Thanks for the reminder.
