I work because . . .

I choose to.  I am very fortunate to finally be to the point where I do not HAVE to work, and in fact, my job does not pay much more than childcare (3 kids under 5) and the taxes on my wages.  In other words, it is not presently financially beneficial for me to work.  In years past, I have had to work to pay for health insurance or student loans.  All of that has fallen into place, and my husband is finally established in his career.  In fact, I did not work for nearly 3 years.  Last summer, I started working again, and I found that I enjoyed it immensely.  For me, it is all about balance.  If I work too much, my children are very unhappy.  If I don't work at all, I am not as pleasant.  I worked hard for my degree, and I enjoy using my brain.  I like being a grown up around other grown ups now and then, and I like wearing nice clothes.  Also, in my job, I am able to help people and to improve their quality of life.  This makes me feel fulfilled on so many levels.  I will admit that at times I really enjoy the appreciation that my patients express, as this is something my children are not able to express.  It is nice to be thanked and appreciated - and it is also nice to be a multi-dimensional woman!
