Best advice - from mom of course :)

The best piece of advice I ever got was when my mother would tell me to "just be yourself!"  Unfortunately, I never really truly understood what this meant until I was grown!  So in the mean time I would hear it and wince because I just didn’t get it and I so wanted to – it sounded so easy!

This led me to an important discovery - being yourself means experiencing life and figuring out who you are to begin with!  That advice (drilled into my head) led me down a path of self discovery.  I found out I like being my naturally happy and optimistic self!  I experimented both with moody reclusiveness and party girl, and realized I certainly have some of those traits, but not in the over abundance as to take over ‘who I am’ – I am social and love the occasional party but not excessive, I also enjoy my down time alone, and just ask my husband if I have ever indulged in a bit of moodiness ;)

The best part about having learned who I am and being true to that is discovering that we all have various strengths and weaknesses.  These are the pieces of our personalities that make us unique and at the same time draw us together.  By just being yourself, you are sharing your strengths with those around you while learning how to build up your weaknesses.

Thanks mom!

This is so true, Kate. Now how do you get this through to our younger girls? You said you never understood it, can we try still? What do you think?

Great advice to live by. You're right: it takes time and experience to "just be yourself."
