The One Day Trip to NYC from SFO

I live in San Francisco, but ocassionally work requires that I am in New York. Before kids, this was easy. Fly in Sunday afternoon, spend a day shopping, walking around New York, attend meetings on Monday, grab dinner with friends and head out the next morning. However, as with everything, this changes with children.

New York still beckons me for work, and I still oblige. But now, I take the latest flight out (10/11pm) of SFO into JFK. While sleeping on a cramped plane is not ideal, getting 5 hours of contiguous sleep anywhere is a good night, and plus, I can put the children to sleep and they won't even know I left!

Mornings are so hectic anyways that the kids barely even recognize my absence-and off they go to school. Meanwhile, by the time they have eaten their breakfast, I have already conducted two meetings and am going into a lunch meeting.

By the time school ends at 3, I have already spent 8 hours in meetings and am enjoying a well-deserved Tom Collins on the last flight out of NY, scheduled to arrive just in time to tuck them into bed.

AWESOME... and Good Night, I'm tired...

I can so very much relate to this! I used to enjoy parts of business travel -- the get in early, walk around, and do some shopping parts. Now it's all about minimizing time away from my daughter. I travel to NYC from Boston often and take the 6am bus there (so I can work, since it has an internet connection) and a 6pm one back. I miss seeing her for the whole day, but not more than that -- not staying overnight, even though friends always ask and try to lure me with fancy meals!
