This mother's day weekend marks our second year participating in the Race for the Cure in Peoria, IL. This is by far my favorite part of the last two mother's days.
Being there, early in the morning with some 30,000 other women, some men and children is amazing. We all have our shirts on, the kids get a special Kids for the Cure shirt. Survivors wear pink shirts and hats. I prayed last year, and I prayed again this year that we will never be participating in the race in a pink shirt. Those that are walking/running in memory of a family member wear a pink tag on the back of their shirt with the names of their loved one(s).
The runners who are being timed start first, once they clear the start line, the survivors go, and then the rest of us. I never know how long it takes us to walk the whole 5K, because we don't actually cross the start line at 0. The end timer said 1:22:56 when we crossed this year. The girls were entertained this year with the pair of black labs, and yappy maltese walking around us. I was talking with my friend Jodie who has walked with us. When we get to the top of one hill, I always take a picture, and as far as I can see in front or behind me are all the people walking together.
I know the girls are too little to appreciate what we're doing, but I hope that we can keep this a yearly tradition, and when they grow up and have their own daughters, that we can do it together.
