What is in our food?

Am I crazy or is it normal to be worried about everything that's in our food? I have been a really healthy eater for a long time but every since I was pregnant, I have gotten even more crazy with nutrition. Before I was pregnant, I did't eat meat and ate low fat vegetable/soy/meat substitute dishes. However, now on top of that, I am noticing how much crap is in our food. I actually lost my taste for anything processed while I was pregnant and everything had to be fresh. Something about the processed food grossed me out while I was pregnant.  Now, before I buy anything new, I check the labels to see what chemicals are in it. I pretty much will only buy things that have no chemicals.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to find fruit in it's own juice? I buy the canned fruit and grind it up for my son, as opposed to buying it in baby jars. Almost every can has high fructose corn syrup along with other crap that I'm not going to feed a kid. So the search is on, I look until I find one in its own juice which, of course, is more expensive. WHat kind of logic is that, anyway? You would think it would be cheaper to leave something in it's own juice than to add man-made crap to it. Salad dressing is all crap and preservatives. Newman's Own is awesome because it's all natural. Even some things that claim "All Natural" on the bottle are not, that's why you have to actually check. Capri Sun is in  a lawsuit right now for claiming "All Natural" when it has High Fructose in it - which is not natural! Lots of pasta sauce has random stuff in it. And forget any boxed food like Mac and Cheese, all crap. Yogurt is a production to buy. Yogurt! I have only found one regular brand of nonfat yogurt that isn't loaded with aspartame and preservatives. Tortillas are loaded with sodium. I have to look through each brand of tortillas to find one that is low-fat and low sodium.  Nuts. I guess this would be easier if I shopped at an organic store like Whole Foods but that costs a fortune (I've already tried that route). Besides, is it just me or shouldn't natural, non-preservative foods be the norm and not the other way around?

The rate of diabetes has sky rocketed, mainly due to high fructose syrup. The rate of obesity is rising every day. Heart disease is rising, especially for women. Cancer is at an all time high. The majority of this is directly related to food consumption. There are things in our food that people don't realize and it's more common to find chemicals in food products than the actual food itself!

So, what have we resorted to? Reading every label that we come across. Also making a lot of stuff from dry goods like rice, lentils, lima beans, and various other beans. Buying fresh vegeables. Buying whole wheat pastas and breads and checking the labels. Obviously, making every single thing from scratch would be optimal but who has time for that in this world? Yes, making my own salad dressing would be fantastic but, come on, just because we don't have tons of time on our hands we should be subjected to chemicals? It just seems so crazy to me that we have to check labels and sort through so much just to get real actual food and not a science experiment in our body.

i am a label reader. my husband thinks i am nuts until i show him and then he is frustraited because he understands why but also thinks it is so stupid to have to read the labels!
7-up is also claiming HFCS is 'all natural' - such craziness!
Oh I really agree. I find it really daunting, reading all the labels and trying to make the best choices. You're right: once you start reading the labels it is a shocker! Hey, have you read "The Omnivore's Dilemma" by Michael Pollen?
