Love after Children

When I had my first child, (heck, when I first announced I was expecting my first child), I received so much advice on how to raise her, from what diapers work best all the way down the line to how to disciple her ten years from then. Maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but I think you get my point. So how come nobody told me amidst all this advice how to make sure my marriage stayed strong through it all? I think only now are we beginning to understand each other and appreciate the kind of parent the other one is. And my children (2) are now 6 and almost 4. My father did mention (and I never forgot this, so I want to pass it on to those of you with young children who are married) that your marriage comes first, even before your children. If your marriage isn't good, then your parenting will be strained. So true. Of course at the time, being still somewhat of a newlywed, I smiled and nodded.

Am I the only one who had a wake-up call on how tough marriage would get after children?

Great post! I think my husband and I have been lucky in that we've known each other 10 years now, and been married 6 of those years before we had kids. So we were well past the newlywed, dewy-eyed stage when things got challenging. We've also been really good at communicating things to each other, so nothing ever sat in the back and just ate away at our marriage. That being said, it has been incredibly hard for me to be a SAHM while he goes off and builds his career everyday. We talk about that, too, but I think it's just something I have to come to terms with. However, it is getting easier as the days go by and I "find" myself - i.e. my niche, and how to keep myself intellectually challenged and happy. :)
