A Different Summer Activity

This summer,  we've been doing something completely unexpected.  A few weeks back, we met a guy Keith who's an amateur (although he's been doing it avocationally for over 30 years) fossil hunter.  The local wilderness park and nature center has themed events every other Wednesday, and we met Keith at one of these "Wild Wednesdays."

Keith volunteers Wednesdays and Saturdays and invited us to come back the next Saturday and told us he'd give my son a real fossil.  We've been going back every Saturday and have made an unexpected new friend.  (It's great to be around someone who's passionate about what they do.)

The area in which we live was covered with ocean once upon a time, so the wilderness park is full of fossils.  Keith has extracted scores of shark teeth from rocks, whale vertebrae and other interesting things.  Last week he and my son broke open a rock and found a shark tooth inside (now part of my son's vast collection).

Tomorrow he's taking us on a dig.  Up the hill, there's a housing development, and you can actually see the rock strata.  This area is simply teeming with fossils.  I'm sure we'll go home loaded with lots more stuff to find homes for.  (Sigh.)  But it will be really cool stuff.
