I finally discovered why my son is whining so much!!!

WOW..it's amazing how I had forgotten what it was like to have my 2yr old be a happy, smiley & carefree toddler.  For the last few months he's been whining, lethargic, and just hard to be around and we've been trying to debug the situation because we know from the other 3 kids that anytime things change, it's usually either a change in the environment (like a new babysitter, daddy gone longer hours, schedules changed, etc) or it's nutritional (lack of vitamins, food, sleep, etc) so we have tried a number of different things and my 1yr old was tested at the doctor and was low in iron, so we tried to give it to my 2yr old also and he didn't like it..pure iron is not tasty at all...it smells like metal, and tastes like you licked a pole!  HA!

So, I finally found Floradix in the fridge today and gave him a tsp. of it in his juice 2x's today...he's a different kid.  Well, actually, he's his usual happy self and not totally done with the whining, but it's alot less and believe me, when you have 6 people in a house and you have a baby that cries off and on for different things and then you have the older kids running around just being typical bubbly kids and then you have this whining kid...it's like nails running down a chalkboard...it gets under your skin and your tolerance gets lower and lower with every day.

We are very calm parents.  Sometimes people think we're too laid back, but after you have a few kids and you realize that they are very resilient and the more freedom you give them, the happier and more productive they are...goes against everything my parents did with me and what most people would think, but my kids are amazing.  I don't run them all the time and make them do what I think they should be doing...they run around outside with their friends (we live on a small street with about 8 kids that are all around the same age on our street) so they go play all day into the evening at the neighbors, riding bikes up and down the street, etc...it's wonderful.  We go and check on them occasionally, but they are so good about telling us where they are going to be and we know all the neighbors, etc...we just let them be.  Other kids come over and they are not used to that freedom and they want us to go sit outside and watch them and be there every minute and it's just not our style.

So, it was wearing on us to have a "high maintenance" kid is why I said all that...we let them be, give them freedoms to play, get food when they want, etc...and our kids even tell us when they are tired and need to go to bed.

I'm seeing the light at the end of the tunnel with this handling of Aidan's vitamins through the Floradix iron supplement.  It's just a tiny amount each day, but once you get it back up to not being deficient, it's magic...it's the same with not enough sleep or not enough food....they get cranky, and unruly...you can usually fix it with just a few things, but when they get deficient in minerals and vites, it takes a bit to get them back up to normal levels and I can't wait to get there...it's been painful to have him so dreary!

I love being with my kids and pride myself in having really cool, laid back kids....now I can have that all again!  yeah!

Thanks for your comments ! Yes, it can be a trying time when you are eliminating every possible thing it could be and still striking out...we've got this kid thing pretty wired (we're not perfect, but like I said, after a few of them, you start to see a pattern of things and stages that they go through) and you can start to predict them or see them right when they are happening instead of being in mystery for a long time or just writing it off as "terrible two's' or some other label.
I do dread teething too...my 14mth old is getting his eye teeth, so every so often we have a choppy night of sleep..usually on the night I decide to stay up later than usual to get some work done....murphy's law of parenthood! LOL!

Thanks so much guys for putting together this site...I"ve had so much fun meeting new people and reading all the comments, groups, notes, etc....it can get pretty lonely as a SAHM and homeschooling parent...my kids get more socialization than I do most of the time...you know you need to get out more when you start looking forward to going grocery shopping by yourself and you know the cashiers by first name...AND they know you too! LOL!

Happy Friday!!

P.S. I took Floradix for my pregnancies and I love it...it really indicates to my body, I can always tell I need it when I take it and I instantly feel better...I am still researching iron deficiencies...wondering if it's genetic, or what..my mother is also anemic and my sister too. Maybe it's just diet, but there has got to be a way to keep your iron levels up and keep them up!

What a relief! I remember when my daughter went through a horrible period around the time she turned one - finally her 4 teeth came out at once and she was all smiles. But that time is really trying!

Christine, thanks for sharing this. Really happy it all worked out for you. And btw, floradix is great! I'm pregnant and slightly anemic, so I was told to take this product. I've been on it for about a month and I really do feel a difference in my energy level. It is also much better then any other iron supplements out there, since it's liquid it's much easier to digest!
