I'm 31yo and have spent the last decade building my career as a business journalist. I love my work. After I became a mother, I've been careful to make career choices that fit my life at home and at work, and I'm just another career woman trying to make it all work! I've lived in NY 6.5 of the last eight years with just a brief move to Florida before and right after my son was born. People say I have more energy than anyone they know, but the truth is, exciting projects at work, time with my family... those things energize me. When I believe in something, it's easy to muster up my inner Superwoman.
Don't worry, it'll get done. (whether it's work, stuff at home, or anything.)
An adjective to describe me:
Driven
My favorite book:
Turbulent Souls (by Stephen Dubner)
My favorite movie:
Top Gun (my brother was a fighter pilot)
Family
Number of children:
1
Age of children:
2
Relationship status:
Married
Parenting advice I follow:
Relax. Your kids feed off your mood. So, if you're anxious, they will be too.
Parenting advice I ignore:
Too many pieces to mention: but in NYC, the main thing I ignore is the "advice" that your kid needs to go to many music/dance/art classes or an expensive preschool in order to make it in this world. Bah!
Favorite activity with my kids:
Go to the zoo. My son LOVES the gorillas and giraffes and I love to see it all through his eyes. We go to the Bronx Zoo all the time.
Work
Work status:
Work full-time
Industry:
Media
Position:
CareerJournal Editor
Employer:
Wall Street Journal
Hours worked per week:
40+
How much I like my job:
I love it!
Job stress level:
Pretty stressful
Best thing about my job:
I'm creating something... trying to build up the content and usability of the Careers site to turn it into the ultimate destination for career guidance, advice, trend stories, features, etc. for professionals. I have a lot of freedom and autonomy and have a great boss and coworkers.
Worst thing about my job:
The commute. It's about 55 minutes and I've always felt that 45 minutes was my outside limit--and it was before I started this job in Oct 07. Also, uncertainty since we're being purchased by Rupert Murdoch (but that's also a good thing... I work mainly online, so there's a lot of excitement).
My dream job:
I'd like to be an investigative projects team editor--guiding reporters and projects online, in print, etc.
