Networking I believe is a way of life to some extent. You need to be able to get out there and find out whats going on. I had to. If I didn't have the courage to get in contact with people , I would have no hope and my goals and dreams would've died. My resolve would have soured and I would be nowhere and depressed. So network when you can, where you can. Just the other day I was on the bus, someone saw I was reading a book about different ways to make money. I told her that I wanted to work from home. The conversation went on from there and we exchanged numbers! I think that's exciting!!!
So don't be shy, your livlihood might depend on netwoking.

Wish I could say I loved it too, but agree with everyone that it's very important. I'm a naturally shy person, so calling or emailing someone I don't know all that well just to say, "HI! Let's get together!" is a bit daunting for me. I usually come up with about 500 reasons why that person's reaction will be, "What the heck does SHE want?"

My question is, how do you stay connected to people when you are out of work so that they don't feel like you have an ulterior motive?

I love it too and I agree that you should be ready to network anytime/anywhere. I meet one of my clients while waiting for my daughter to get out of school. I have also met a client in a doctors office....so, you just never know. Thank you for your input Kathy.

Thanks Kathy for your response. I agree with you that it is important to realize that you can network anytime and be prepared to network all the time. Because that way you have the "arsenal" of contacts to draw upon when you may need them. However, networking isn't just about knowing "of" someone (eg. I met them once for 4 seconds at an event 1 year ago so I can call upon them for support on my current event). It is about consistency and being in front of the other people in a positive valuable way.

I love networking! I think it is something that I have to be prepared to do any time of day or night. Networking doesn't just happen at coordinated network events and I am a believer that we shouldn't network ONLY when we need to (e.g. we find ourselves unexepectedly unemployed). I don't have a burning network question really.
