Do you think whether or not you like your job contributes to how happy you are overall?”

  • Without a doubt. I was miserable at the last firm I was at (it was the work, not the people) and I was bringing way too much of that misery and stress home. I was fortunate to be in a situation where I could just quit (it took me 3 months to actually do - not so easy) and take some time to regroup and figure out a new plan. Here I am, 2 years later, owning and operating my own business and loving almost every minute of it. And I am happy.

  • I believe job satisfaction really can make a difference in overall happiness. I've worked in stressful jobs I didn't like, but needed the money, and I was depressed a lot and not very fun to be around. Now that I'm doing what I went to school for, counseling, I'm so much happier, even though it's hard work (and switching to a less stressful agency also helped a lot, too!).
    I love what I do!

  • I think it is one of the BIGGEST contributors to overall happiness. Right now I am NOT happy in my career for a myriad of reasons... this bubbles over into every aspect of my life, from how much patience I have with the kids to how loving I am feeling toward my husband. That said, being happy in other aspects of your life also carries over into your career. If one is happy in their homelife, it makes their worklife much improved.

  • Definitely... We spend enormous amount of time at work and if you don't like what you are do, you tend to bring your negative energy home and it's just a never ending cycle of negativity.... So I really do believe that being happy at work is extremely important to your overall happiness.

  • I believe that it does. Your job sets your whole mood. You plan to not let it bother you, but deep down is does leave its mark. Hopefully you have a job that you will enjoy and gives you satisfaction.

  • Yes, going to work somewhere that makes you feel miserable filters into your home life. You become cranky, easily aggitated and aggrevated and sometimes depression sets in. It's not worth it. It's best to seek new employment.

  • Absolutely! Many of us spend more time at work than we do with our partners/families. if that chunk of time is spent doing something you don't like then it's going to be hard to feel happy in general. On the other hand, if you don't enjoy what you do but enjoy the benefits of it then perhaps it evens out?
