Do we set ourselves up for a disappointment by setting unrealistic New Year's resolutions? Are your resolutions achievable?”

  • If the resolutions are too large to conquer, then yes I think we can set ourselves up. This year I tried something new. Instead of saying to myself I need to lose 30 pounds my resolution is I want to be healthier. It is less pressure. I am thinking of it in terms of making choices based on my desire to get healthier and stay that way. That way the weight loss is just a fringe benefit, and I am not obsessing about every pound. I will let you know if it works.

  • Yes!! When you make a resolution very specific, you make it achievable...and *action is the enemy of worry*!!

  • i think you only set yourself up for disappointment when you say 'I resolve to do X' and then quickly follow with 'why? it will never happen, i can't ACTUALLY do X!!' because then you are just setting yourself up for failure! if you want to TRY something, then resolve to try it and don’t put the pressure on yourself to succeed. (i have a hard time with this, i always want to be the best within the first 20 minutes of starting something new! lol)

For example, instead of saying ‘I resolve to lose weight’ because really, who doesn’t? I have decided to say ‘I resolve to run a mile’ and ‘ I resolve to do something nice for myself once a month’ because this makes me feel good about myself and when I feel good about myself I am more likely to get on that treadmill and walk/run so I can get that mile! And as far as I know, if you burn more calories and take in the same amount of food, you SHOULD lose weight. That’s the theory I am banking on anyway!

It’s all about the steps that come together to reach the ultimate goal. So instead of stating a vague goal, state something tangible that is doable but that also puts you in line to achieve the BIG goal!

Ok that was really long but I had to get it out! :)
