My 10yr old is a A/B student. He does homework, studies as soon as he gets home. There is no TV, Computer, Play time until it's done. And that's how it is. We have to sign the assignment book. Recently his teacher sent me an email telling me that Zach is such a good student that he doesn't need to get the assignment book signed. Zach said he still wants me to sign it just so I can see that he is doing his work. Wow, hunh. Our daughter is 13 yrs older than our soon. She also had the same rules.

At our house with our seven-year old there is only one rule - she doesn't leave the table until she completes her homework - period. My husband or I will check in to see how she's doing or answer questions and even sit with her sometimes to go over it. There is the challenge and sometimes major distraction of her two-year old brother wanting to play with her, so we actually have to keep him busy as well.

We have a pretty set schedule when it comes to homework. Snack first and then homework. All homework has to be completed before playing or watching TV.

Thing 1 has a ton of homework every night and we have to stay on top of him to complete it all. The greatest motivation for him is that if his homework is not done then he does not go to practice for this sport or that. You would be suprised how quickly he completes his work.
Well. . .I now know at least part of my son's poor study habits and distraction are due to his eye problems. But, even with that problem, he can be motivated by treats. Sad to say, but I got a 100% reading test out of him by offering a trip to Culvers. Speeches about a career in janitorial services and being broke and living off his little brother have not worked as academic motivators.
