With my first 2 pregnancies, I was able to take off 12 weeks through FMLA. I had enough sick/vacation time in my bank to take the first 2 months off paid and then the last one was unpaid both times. With my 3rd pregnancy (different job), I had 5 weeks of disability pay (60% of my regular pay) and they gave me an extra 7 weeks of unpaid leave - but I was responsible for paying my own health insurance premiums while off (over $700/month for a family). It was quite a struggle and I ended up not going back to that job after my leave was over.
My company didn't pay me anything, but allowed me to take the full 8 weeks allotted to a c-section, plus 6 weeks of Family Medical Leave. With my first baby I followed that to the letter, this time around I decided to take advantage of the fact that they are pretty relaxed and really wanted me to come back; I took the 8 weeks of leave and 6 weeks of paid sick leave that I had accumulated, plus two of the FML weeks. It was nice to stretch out my time with the baby a little.
WOW! I didn't realize how lucky I had it until I went to work for another company. 5 years ago when my son was born I got 8 weeks maternity leave all paid at 100%. No one has maternity leave anymore. It's all disability and half pay and you have to take your vacation days. It's like they are trying to gyp you out of what should be rightfully yours. Paid time off to recover and be w/ your new child.
wow, most of you are so lucky. I am faculty at a state university so I got up to 12 weeks unpaid leave. I planned to take 8 weeks. Two weeks before I left my boss told me I was expected to continue answering email and taking questions over the phone while on leave, so I said I'd have to be paid for that. Since I'm salaried I tried to get my full salary for being essentially 'on call' during my leave but was unsuccessful. I got paid for whatever hours I claimed I was working while on leave. So it ended up being about half time leave for half time pay. I felt really gypped and hope that anyone else in my department who ends up pregnant starts strategizing with me from the start so she doesn't end up like I did.
I had planned on taking 12 weeks, all paid, because I had worked out a good deal with my company ... which at the time I was fortunate as I was also going through a divorce and my ex had tied up all my money. Yet, I still feel guilty taking it because the company didn't want me to mention it as they really didn't want to provide that to all their female employees. Ironically, I'm not a baby person, so when there was a big emergency about 6 weeks into leave, I started back a few hours each day, working my way back to full time by the 12 weeks. Do I regret going back early? Not at all. I echo Mandy's bit about the "normalcy" of work. I was completely out of my element as a new, single mom. At least at work I knew why my colleagues were crying and whiney (and at least I didn't have to change their diapers)! I was also able to build up the good will, and the financial resources to work for myself now that he's older and can really benefit from my having a flexible schedule.
Actually, I'm on maternity leave now. I can take up to 12 weeks, but only 8 of them are paid through disability (70% - and that's only if you've paid for supplemental disability). I'm using vacation at 1/2 time to pay for the remaining month, because I'll start back to work on a part-time basis towards the end of February.

12 weeks for me - 2 paid for by the company, the next 4 were short term disability paid at 60%, and the last 6 were unpaid. But we can carry sick time from year to year, and we have generous vacation/personal time, so I was able to use that to be paid during the last 6 weeks. What I did and will do again (someday), is take some days unpaid so i didn't run out of time and could use them when the baby gots sick after I went back to work.

all of 8 weeks, and i got 6 weeks (but really only 5) of short term disability. i could have used up my vacation time but wanted to save it for doctor appointments etc. was NOT thrilled with this...
With my son 6 years ago, I took 6 weeks at half pay. With my daughter this past fall, I took 12 weeks. I got 6 weeks at half pay, 6 weeks unpaid, and the equivalent of 2 weeks' pay with my disability insurance.
I took 9 weeks. Two weeks paid 100%, 6 weeks paid 70%, 1 week unpaid.
