Although I don't agree with my mother on some things, I always can count on her to give me sound advice on parenting. I have never received bad advice from her and I think I turned out just fine. :)

I ask some AP moms I know who have older kids and have already been through what I'm going through. I love my mom, but we don't always agree on parenting.

I have two go-to people, both SILs. One is the mom of triplets. Other had her 3rd child a week after we had our first. If they don't know the answer, we call the pediatrician!

my mom - i can ask her for advice and the reasons why and if, for whatever reason, i don't take the advice, she is ok with that too. though i do point out to her when some study validates a 'technique' she has always maintained to work! everyone needs a little validation right? and more and more i see how she stuck with her gut and what she knew was right and just NOW are things being scientifically proven! weird! so yeah, my mom is my best advisor!!!

My aunt. When I was expecting, I read an article that suggested parents find a parenting mentor. How? Well, look around you and find someone whose kids you really like. If the kids are turning out well, they're probably doing something right! (I don't ask my mother because she hates giving advice. "Whatever you think, dear" is not very helpful!)

The find a mentor by their kids caused me to choose my aunt, rather than the friend I might otherwise have chosen. My friend had started her family a little ahead of me, we were very close, she understood me. Who better to go to for vent-sessions and advice? Then I looked at their children.

My (much-younger) cousins are amazing people -- cheerful, funny, creative, considerate, polite. My friend's children were, much as I loved her, whiny, demanding, and prone to tantrums... Hm. So I stayed friends with my friend, but I went to my aunt for advice!

Definitely my mom. She is the best mom I know, not just because she's my own. Now that I'm a new mom, I look back and admire all the years they brought us up with their humble beginnings.
