Are you concerned about sex offenders living in your neighborhood? I do a search every once in awhile and up until last week we had none in our area. Now we have 7- the nearest is a mile and a half away. He was just released from a Kentucky prison after doing icky things to a 12 year old in Iowa. The rest are from out of state as well, and 2 of them are "unmappable". My state must have fewer restrictions (I am guessing here) that make it easier to live here. I realize they have to live somewhere, but when it comes to my kids- this makes me crazy.

Terrible, but I have to agree with Annie and Kathy, earthmama. It's the one's who haven't been caught that you have to be worried about. The registered ones, I'd loosely presume would be watching themselves a bit more b/c they know eyes are on them.
But you have to teach your children about stranger danger. I do.
You know what I am MORE scared of? The number of sexual predators that don't properly register their address and therefore aren't represented on that search engine you are using. Regardless of what information you are finding in your searches, be sure to be cautious and teach your children to be cautious every single day. Annie is right - how many haven't even been CAUGHT yet?

It's a scary thing. It's even scarier when you realize that there are many many more potential or would-be sex offenders that haven't been caught yet. Regardless of where or how we live, there are creeps that could harm our kids, whether they are registered or not. More than likely the registered ones will be more careful, especially since people know who they are and they are being watched. But there is no sense in us living in total fear. All we can do is teach our kids how to be less trusting of people they don't know and to be watchful.
