My son turned 11 today to find out he has a girlfriend at school. She is in the same class. It is obvios puupy love , whayever that may be. They text all hours in to the eve. Tommorrow is my sons party with the kids. She and her mother are going to be there. What an awkward position. I bought books on this subject to try to understand how to deal eith this subject. They almost broke up the other day. He was in tears. This is emotionally draining for a child to go throught these adult feelings and they are to imature at this age to understand and cope with rejection as well as mainaining high morals. Dateing for marriage is what I was raised to believe was proper. I still am shocked my child has a girlfriend. I don't want to push him away. What should I do?”

  • Having a 13 year old son and a 16 year old son I can tell you that there is no perfect way to handle this situation. My best advise, from experience, is to just be there for him. He is at an age where there should not be any opportunities for the two of them to be alone, so to say that they are dating is overstating it. I have learned a lot from my two. As I said, just be there for him and make sure that you know where he is at all times and it should not be a problem. BRACE YOURSELF! This is only the first of MANY to come. Pretty soon, you'll be an expert.
