Have any of you moved to a new town with school age children? How did you help them make new friends and transition? How did you get to know people?

NATALY - THAT IS SO TRUE. ONCE YOU LEAVE THE CITY IT IS EASIER TO MEET PEOPLE. lol.
I even tell my single girlfreinds to move the burbs so they can meet someone but they are afraid I am putting the out to pasture.

Anyway- join your local YMCA and enroll your kids in classes. Join the newcomers club and go the free mommy and me events at your local library. THe park as Nataly said is always a great place to meet families.
I don't know if this helps but we moved recently -- our daughter is 4. Interestingly, we moved from a huge city (NYC), to a suburb and have found it easier to meet people. We've met a lot through her preschool -- I make it a point to get there a little earlier and both myself and my husband offer to volunteer when we can (we've each done it just twice, since we both work, but that has been helpful in connecting with other parents). We've also met some people at the local playground -- which I never thought we'd do:)
We relocated from a small country town in Texas to a small city in Oklahoma almost five years ago. At the time my son was entering his 8th grade year and my daughter was entering 2nd grade. The best way to help your kids is to get them involved in sports or a school activity. My son had to be here in July before school to practice with the football team, that helped him transition into the middle school much easier and he knew kids before school started. With my daugther, we joined the girls scouts and went to both the "welcome back to school nights" before school started, this allowed her to meet her teacher and meet some of the kids in her class. All I can say is get invovled, that's the best way to meet other people.
