Wow, I´m impressed your son is already potty trained and weaned. My son is the same age and he talks a blue streak, but he is a bit further behind in physical things. I think kids really do learn at different rates and it´s pretty common for boys to start really speaking a bit later.

My friend and I had babies at the same time and her daughter was always way ahead of Dorian in sitting, crawling and walking, etc. Meanwhile, she didn´t say much more than "mama" and "dada". Dorian on the other hand, took his own sweet time to crawl and walk (after his first birthday!), but he was babbling away long before she was. It was like they were focusing on different areas of interest. I see this with my baby now, too. He´s already walking and he crawled earlier than my older son, but he only says a handful of short words.

I´d check with the doctor to rule out anything physical, but other than that, relax. Kids do things on their own clock. Heck, Benjamin Franklin didn´t start talking until he was FOUR! ;)

Well said earthmama. Our littlest A is dealing with the same issue. At 18 months she had such severe blockage of her eardrums they couldn't vibrate, so in essence she heard nothing. She is still behind her age group in speech, but our pediatrician has been of great help. We check in with her every 6 months or so to keep tabs on things, and she said as long as she continues to make progress that's the most important thing.
obviously I am typing way too fast and doing too many things at once - at warp speed- I hope you can read through the typos! sorry!
Christina, that is wonderful that hw is already potty trained- you are one lucky gal! I can't remember when my 3 year old started to *really* talk, but if I remember correctly, it was after the age of 2. She babbled and spoke words here and there but it was awhile before it was actual sentences. Perhaps give your pediatrician a call and tell hi/her your concerns. They can have you in for a visit, go over some tests (the same kind all kids get at their checkups) and explain to you how they think he development is progressing. You could wait the 7 months until his 3 year old checkup, (they do more tests at this age, like jump on one leg, jump over this piece of paper, what is this animal, etc., plus hearing and vision) but if you are concerned now, then give them a call and go see what they say. That is what they are there for!
peace,
~earthmama
