Great question; My boss is not quite my "friend" but we do discuss family and such. My bigger problem is that I am very friendly with a guy that works for me, so if and when I am unhappy with something that he does, it's a little tricky on how to approach it because I don't want to offend him personally, but the line between personal and professional gets blurry.
I currently don't have a boss - my direct supervisor left about three months ago, and she has yet to be replaced. She was wonderful, and was - and still is -a good friend. It worked out because I have a good work ethic so she didn't really ever have to reprimand me for anything. I really couldn't have had a better boss and I miss her around the office every day.
