Do a lot of people in your line of work take off time in August? Do you tend to still check your email/voicemail while on vacation?”

  • Yes I tend to check e-mail while on vacation. I don't think it's a good habit, however if I don't check my e-mail I tend to be more anxieous during my time off and I enjoy it less.

  • my office (and the DC area in general!) seems to take vacation in August! I take mine NOT in august :) anyway - i will check email occasionally but not VM. i hate VM even when i am IN the office and i have trained just about anyone i deal with to not leave an VM. as for email, i check but i dont always respond. most 'fires' tend to put themselves out if you give them 1/2 a day ...

  • I teach, so the month of July is my most true "rest" period. I check my school email periodically in between mid June and the start of school in late August, but I make a point of minimizing my school contact. For teachers, this is not a paid vacation, and we are not required to check in. Many of us do, though.

  • I am in food service and I have at least one request for every single day in August. It is so frustrating because everyone seems to think they can demand time off, rather than request it.
    Anyway, I just got back from vacation myself and I did check my e-mail once. But then, I don't have an internet connection with work. I figure vacation is my chance not to worry and that any problems will either be taken care of or will still be there when I get back - they can wait. It's family time. :D
