How many cars do you have in your family? Have you downsized to a smaller car or less cars because of the cost of gas?”

  • I have one, a 2003 that gets about 30 MPG. I usually work at home, so I only drive an average of 2-3 hours a week including all personal errands. I try to walk as much as I can, but I live in a suburb where the nearest park or corner store is a mile away (up & down hills), the nearest bus stop is a couple miles more, and my two kids are under two years old. So there's no way I'm giving up my wheels.

When I was in college, I was one of a family of 8 that shared 2 cars. Meaning one car was for Mom and the other was for everyone else - Dad, the 4 college students, and the 2 school kids. Our school and Dad's job were 12 & 15 miles from home, and there was no public transportation in the county. To make matters more interesting, someone always had to be home when the school kids were not in school. It was not easy, but we were able to make it work.

  • We have two cars - a minivan and a convertible. I use to commute everyday by driving the car because monthly parking equaled the same amount for monthly subway fare, and gas was nothing. However, with current gas prices, I take the subway Tues - Thurs and drive only on Mondays and Fridays for "me time". With the weather being cooler, my husband is trying to walk the kids to most places (even grocery shopping) rather than driving everywhere in the minivan.

  • We actually don`t have a car. We do have a motorbike, but that`s not really child compatible, so it`s buses if we are going out with the kids. Despite the gas issues, we are seriously thinking about getting a car.

  • We are a two-car, three driver family - temporarily. I hope my daughter doesn't need a car for a while; beyond the cost of the car, insurance and gas and repairs will be astronomical, and she has very little income right now. During our overlap, the time that she is home and I am teaching, we do a lot of creative car pooling.

  • We have one car (yes, just one!) in our family right now. It is a major pain, because that means I cannot go anywhere when my husband's at work (I work from home). However, right now, at 7 months pregnant I don't usually like the task of installing and taking out my son's car seat anyway, so we're waiting until the next one is here to get a second car. We'll need a bigger car than we have now (Ford Focus) so the gas issue is going to be a problem. We're thinking about getting a hybrid.
