Had a tough day with the kids. It was "I had it first day" "That's mine" etc.. How do you handle situations like that? ”

  • My two boys (almost 3 and almost 6) get into these arguments multiple times everyday, and unlike my husband I have learned to tune them out. Continually yelling at them to stop wrestling each other did not go anywhere, so I eventually told them that if anyone gets hurt then they have to help each other. (Please know that I always help them, but I'm tired of being cried to for a bumped head or a little scratch.) Remarkably they have learned to work it out themselves as they know that Mom is not going to mediate for them any longer.

Remember to take a deep breath once and a while too.

  • My kids are going through exactly that phase. Not sure I have any advice. I usually tell them: The argument is over, and take whatever they were fighting about. Then the message is: If you two can't work it out, no one gets it.

I also consistently remind them that life isn't fair. That sometimes one person will get more than someone else, and they need to deal with it. Pretty heady stuff for 8- and 5-year-olds, but they have to learn it sometime.

    Good luck.
