Talking with friends about money - OK or taboo?”

  • I usually consider this taboo. The chance that someone in the conversation will end up hearing something that makes them feel uncomfortable is just not worth it. Why does anyone need to know what you make anyway? I never want to know how much anyone else makes, unless they report to me and it is my job.

  • I think it depends if they are a REAL friend. A REAL friend should be happy for you if things are going well, and if they are not going well they would be supportive. You should be able to share that kind of information with a REAL firend, that's what a REAL friend is for.....isn't it.

  • I think it is a big deal to tell people "the number." I am not going tell people how much money I make. I don't share that with anyone except my husband. People talk and gossip too much about things that are none of their business and I wouldn't want my income to be part of that. Now if it were a really good friend and we were having a serious conversation about finances I would probably give a ballpark if the conversation warranted it.

  • I feel out the situation. I never ask for personal information, but will sometimes give it if in a comfortable conversation.

  • i agree, saying the figure is OK specially if the person asks for it.

  • The one thing I don't get is, why how much you make is such a big secret. It's like people will talk about that they got a 10 or 20% raise, they got a promotion, bonus, commission, but will never name the figure.
What's the big friggin' deal? Just say it, I make 100K, or 30K or 500K, or whatever. Why be so secretive about the figure? I mean if the fact that you get promoted, bonuses, and raises is not a secret why is the number?

  • It depends on who you are talking to and how personal it gets.
