How do you manage last minute work travel and young children? I'm exhausted and my family is in disarray.”

  • It's very hard. I have travelled alot over the last 10 years. And you know what, the kids survived. Always. Sometimes they were mad, sometimes they were sad--and so was I. Yours are too small to understand much about it, but they will understand your mood and your attitude. I try (operative word is TRY) to be matter of fact ''This is part of my job" and to make my leaving no more traumatic than when I leave in the morning. My husband reminds them that I am at work (and not 'away'). I think that sets the tone for them for the whole time I am gone. Web cams are great for checking in -- or video yourself reading a story before you go. Mine love that. I also try to take some time off when i get back (even just a few hours) to get caught up on laundry, sleep and sanity. Hang in there, it gets easier!

  • Oh, that sounds really tough - and that is a clingy age as well, at least in my experience. I hope you do find a way to limit the travel. This might sound silly, but I used to always bring my daughter a gift when I came back -- yes, I know, it's like a bribe, but as she got a little older, she actually looked forward to it, and I think it helped take the edge off a bit.

  • My kids are really young--14 months. My trips are 4-7 days long... the babies (twin girls) are so clingy and out of sorts when I come back. I'm trying to find a different position at my workplace to avoid the problems, but it is just awful!

  • I've so been there, so first of all, really feel your pain. One time I had to go to a board meeting to cover for my colleague - and had 3 hours notice for an overnight trip. I don't know if I have any great advice, but I focused on simplifying everything - pizza for dinner, pre-made lunch stuff for lunch for my daughter for preschool, etc. I felt like I was leaving chaos behind but surprisingly, DH and daughter survived fine. How long do you have to go for?
