How much do you spend on clothes for yourself during the year? Does your job require a separate business wardrobe?”

  • Hello! I see you! All of you! And your old sad underwear! I think the trick is to spend smart; buy things you really need and will really wear. Spend more on them -- get a great sweater, rather than three meh sweaters -- and then take care of your clothes. In the short term, you will spend more, but in the long term, you will have a reliable, well made pieces that will outlast trends. Okay then!

  • Oh, shoot, I forgot that Susan W. might be spying on us:) (Ok, speaking of undie situation - not that you all want to hear this about the person running this company, but it needs a splurge:)

  • Ha! About $200, and just about every single shirt I have has a stain on it, and I won't even TELL you about my bra and undie situation, in case Susan W pops in ;)

  • Just to give you guys some perspective - I used to read this site called Urban Baby when I was a hip New Yorker:) - there was a question like this there, and many moms posted that they spend about $4-5k on clothes for themselves per year! So Jenorama and Florinda - I hope this gives you some perspective!!!

  • I don't know. I don't have time to shop often (my husband does most of the household shopping), but when I do I tend to spend a lot. I've probably spent about $600 this month on clothes and shoes. It doesn't help that the only store within walking distance of my office is Neiman Marcus.

  • This is a great question. I actually spend a lot on my clothes (although not much this year given that i'm pregnant and trying to avoid spending any $$ on this stuff). On top of that, i'm with Linda - my husband often brings stuff home for me - he loves to shop and has great taste! But once we have a kid, I wonder how my (and his) priorities will change!

  • Ok, I was going to answer my own question but you guys will put me to shame - Jenorama and Florinda, you don't spend that much on yourselves! (At least I don't think so.) Until recently my job required a pretty solid business wardrobe, and while I am generally really frugal, this, along with shoes, coats, etc usually meant several thousand a year on clothes. I have all these suits hanging in my closet now, with not much to do with them:)

  • Thank goodness for Jenorama's answer, because I'm in the same boat - but I am trying to cut back. My work does require a fairly professional wardrobe, since I'm in an office 8-5 M-F, but it's mostly skirts and nice tops and sweaters that can be dressed down for the off-hours. But I've always enjoyed clothes and clothes shopping - the nice part is that I enjoy doing it with/for my family, as well as for myself.

  • I have four kids so as any typical mom would do, I spend more on them than I do myself. My husband is actually the one that will come home with new clothes for me.

My business wardrobe entails a nice and comfy pair of lounge pants and a tank top. If it's cold, I will put on my fuzzy slippers to keep me warm. :)

  • Oh my lord. Way too much money, probably. I don't have a number, but I do know that it's probably about $1000 a year-- I re-stock on T-shirts every spring; I buy one or two good pairs of shoes a year; this year, I got some dresses and clothes from J.Jill to wear to BlogHer, and then didn't go to BlogHer. My *conferences* require a separate wardrobe, not my job.

  • Not enough. Somehow I am willing to drop cash on the kid and the horse, but balk when it is myself. It is starting to get ridiculous.
