I need some career advice. I am currently working for someone else as an independant contractor in real estate with no room for advancement or more money. Although I am an independant contractor, he dictates my schedule, although if I need time off it is ok and he's flexible. However, I am torn between branching out by myself doing real estate rentals (as sales are impossible right now) or getting a sales job in a different field that has base pay plus salary and benefits. I would like to work for myself so that by the time my son starts kindergarden, I can be home with him after school. My husband is pretty certain that I could make at least what I'm making now on my own, maybe more (I am not as confident as he is right now). I did work for myself for many years in other fields and the stress of always having to hussle got to me which was why I ended up working where I am now. A corporate sales job with paid time off and benefits would be nice, I'm sure I could make a lot of money, but at the same time, I could not make my own hours and be home with my son or at his activities. Any thoughts out there?”

  • It's great that your husband is supporting & encouraging you to try and make a move on your own. He certainly believes you can do it, so why don't you work on that perspective and see what you need to do to make it work? You might want to line up a few more gigs "on the side" in case the real estate does not pick up for a while. There are many things you can do from home -- it does require some research up front though.
You need to seek the career that will make you happy -- life goes on when the little ones get big!
Remember that what makes mommy happy makes baby happy!
    Good luck!

  • It's that catch 22 between security and possibility. I myself have always tended towards security because I know that I am not really the entreprenureal type...I need oversite to keep me on my game. :) But if you have what it takes and you'd be happier then I'd say go for it. I wish I could. :)
